Oh wow, we are back to that time that phone makers are making weird designs, experimenting on what will stick. Good times. Not just copying the notch, curve glass, etc.

LG Superfan, 27 Aug 2020Magnetic connector would be better for longevity so ofcourse we are not getting it anytime soo... more LG, who are well known to innovate and bring unique things, have introduced magnetic USB ports with the V60 ThinQ : https://9to5google.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2020/02/androidpolice-v60-compare-g8x-cases-usb.png https://www.gsmarena.com/lg_v60_thinq_5g-review-2101p3.php But this is the only exemple I know about on a smartphone, but it is on the dual display case and probably for the obvious reason that stacking two USB port would take too much space, so sadly this isn't the regular phone connector. At least they took the proper approach of using an adapter, allowing to plug any USB-C cable, rather than using dedicated cable, which is a mistake as it force to carry the cable rather than the small adapter. If you are curious about what I consider the best implementation : For the adapter need to be carried around, my personal fictional concept phone design have a solution that I think would work quite well : The stylet you see here : https://i.imgur.com/teOlUTu.png Is voluntarily in 5 segments, the main tip consist of the small battery, gyros, accelerometers, buttons and wireless transmitter (though, being a highly sophisticated graphene display, it work in two mode, capacitive and physical touch, allowing when needed to use gloves and other non capacitive ready objects, and also allowing the stylet to simply be used without having to constantly stream its position, when using in the air in front of the phone, the two IR camera working in a mix of structured light, 3D ToF Flash LiDAR type and stereoscopy is used to check its position, but only in some rare other cases, the gyros and accelerometers are used to stream its movements. So despite the small tip segment, a small battery isn't an issue as it normally only need to send button press rather than constant movements). And the 4 other segments are magnetic connectors to port with a magnetic to 3.5mm jack for the audio connector, and for the charging/data connector, a USB-C, Lightning and Micro USB to magnetic adapter are provided, though if it was a real product, additional adapters would also be available, like the other Jack size : https://www.headphonesty.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/different-jack-size-1100x733.jpg And some regular (the big one) USB to magnetic for example. The stylet itself would have two structural frame extending from the main tip to its end, those two would allow both to secure the adapters in place, and when one or more are in use (or missing) to still have a stylet length sized kept for both the click (to extract it) and holding it. This way, you can have adapters always with you while also serving a secondary purpose. The audio adapter is quite simple and straightforward : https://i.imgur.com/z3zyt2P.png It is just rings that correspond to the different segments of a jack connector : https://i1.wp.com/gossipfunda.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/3.5mm-2Bjack-2Bpin-2Bout.png But the power and data connector would be a little more complexe to understand : https://i.imgur.com/nOcG7jl.png Note that typical USB 2 and 3 micro B type (the older smartphone USB) always have the same number of pins : https://cdn57.androidauthority.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/USB-Types-and-Pins-Explained.jpg Being ground, power and data + and - and an ID, I'll comeback to the USB-C after, the Lightning have a little more with 8 of them : https://nyansatan.github.io/lightning/resources/lightning_port_pinout.jpg Being a ground, a power, two + and - data and two for ID. But the most complex is the USB-C with his 24 pins as seen in the other image, it have 4 only for the ground, already leaving 20 pins for other purposes, then you can count 4 other for power, making it 16, out of those, 4 are actually 2 time the same (for reversible capabilities), there is then 4 + and - couple for USB-C high speed connection along with two for ID and a secondary bus. Meaning that effectively, with my design, I only need 4*2+2+2+2 (14) pins for data and ID and 2 other for power, bu my design have 24 external rings and 2 inner rings (for power). Those additional ones are used for carrying information from the port to magnetic adapter indicating in which orientation it is. Then, from there, a multiplexer is used, if you don't know what it is, well it is simply a switch that allow, from a control input, to take multiple input and select one that will be sent to the output : https://media.geeksforgeeks.org/wp-content/uploads/20200504214340/Multiplexer.pngg Using a combinaison of which orientation it is and which adapter it is (USB, USB-C or lightning, regardless of their size), use multiplexer to drive the proper input to the corresponding controller, allowing for dedicated USB, Lightning and USB-C controller for maximizing their capabilities and allowing for their respective maximum data rate. In short, it is compatible with all plug type and properly use their standard and allow maximum speed despite being totally compatible with all other in a native way. The nice part is that, all those electronic doesn't need to be big since the non-power pins aren't at too high power, so a small chip could handle all that, making it effectively smaller than what an USB port (micro or USB-C) is on a regular smartphone. It would also be easy to support DisplayPort, HDMI and even some other type of numeric input. Note that the power is systematically redirected by the adapter to the inner ring, allowing a dedicated power controller to handle high power regardless of the data/plug type, allowing maximum Lightning and USB-C power delivery capabilities despite using a small chip for data (that wouldn't like the 100w of USB PD). But to be really practical, it should be done as an universal standard that every smartphone maker would use rather than each one having its proprietary one, which would cause an adapter hell. That's why I gave away this idea (along other), in the hope that it might be found by someone working in the relevant sector, who would make a real thing out of this idea, because it would be a really nice thing if we could get those magnetic connector on phones, they have tons of advantages, and if they become popular enough, a dedicated cable might be the next thing coming, perhaps making a better standard (amazing speed of the Thunderbolt 4 if it can also be put into the compatibility mix when it get released as USB-4, but if possible the latest Thunderbolt (now being the 4 coming, even if it doesn't change from the 40Gbps of the Thunderbolt 3) standard and high power of the USB-C) mainly if we take use of all the 24 available data pins, while being "reversible" (orientationless) and making adapters irrelevant, making physical ports a thing of the past and those magnetic connector (note the distinction I make between port and connector) something that have all advantages of wired power/data while also having none of its cons and even showing additional advantages. Another particularity of my design, the magnet part is on the adapter/cable rather than on the phone side, I think this is best because you can secure the adapter on a metallic surface, the phone won't clash with your keys, the phones won't require to have its magnet remagnetized if it loose too much its property (and just replacing the cable/adapter is better/cheaper/more convenient), it make for the phone design simpler as it just need the "contactors" (each individual pin based on contact on such connector) and under the thin protecting layers between the rings, a ferrite part (which is an insulator) filling the gaps would allow for really good magnetic strength as it have excellent magnetic attraction properties and can even be made a magnet (the dark grey magnets are typically ferrite while the shining one are typically neodymium). Magnetic adapters have tons of advantages : Less internal space needed, no physical port that can get stuff inside, native waterproof, can't be damaged by bending the adapter/cable, can easily be attached/detached, without even looking, etc. Of course all that is fictional, but totally faisable and I think I dig well enough to details to make sure it is possible and realistic but also the best possible implementation. Maybe in the future all devices will have those magnetic connectors as they could be actually cheaper than regular ports, and since we are heading toward removing ports (now it is the Jack and soon the USB), it could be the best possible alternative to keep the huge advantage and practicality of cables while removing all impracticalities caused by physical ports. I hope you enjoyed this technical description.

I can't be sure from the video, but it looks like this phone doesn't have a front (selfie) camera. That seems to indicate that the small screen can or has to face outward so you can use the back cameras for selfies. That's actually not a bad solution, especially from bloggers.

I can only think that the second smaller screen is tucked away behind the phone in a static position and can only be used when the main phone is rotated 90 degrees. Not gonna lie, I like this idea. Remember the Nokia N93 and N93i?

I'll keep posting m... more Translation : "Even knowing my opinion can cause arm, I'll still keep posting it because I am an egoistic narcissist arrogant idiot that refuse to accept what I say is wrong". Most innovation are good and useful, and none can be deemed useless for everyone anyway, that's why ANY innovation is worth defending as long as they aren't disruptive (meaning invasive of a market, like punch holes, notches and curved edge who represent a way too big part of available smartphones), because there is always someone who will want, have use or even need it. This is not an opinion but a fact, lately peoples tend to consider everything as opinion, but when mentioning a real phenomena, this isn't an opinion but an observation of a situation, AKA, fact.

What I love about LG and Sony are they never try to fight with other brand, stand alone with their concept. And its great, can become different than other user. Already try LG V50 dual display, need a powerbank since it consumed battery a lot but not a problem for me since I have 5 powerbank. Usually use it for Nintendo DS and manga. LG Wing, maybe ill buy it next year December. Great job on the innovation.

Crackling Doom, 27 Aug 2020Why are you getting so upset over an opinion that doesn't align with yours? I'm enti... more Because when written out on the internet, opinion have influence, innovation is already lacking, and not just in smartphone, if we want innovation, we shouldn't criticize none except if it is a really bad one, otherwise it discourage brands from innovating, that's why. A verbal discussion doesn't really influence much except for the two persons having it, but things written on internet, mainly on articles that investor are likely to read, which also include the comment section, can have a deterministic effect. So if it was just your opinion and it had no influence, yeah, sure, but it do have influence. Yes, but not like that. And traditional double display can't be used on car as there isn't phone holder adapter for them unlike this one, so this IS an innovation.

I'm entitled to my opinion just like how you are entitled to yours. If you don't like my opinion then feel free to ignore it and move on. Secondary display is something before, first with LG V10 and most recently with the LG V60. This LG Wing phone is just a spin-off (no pun intended) of something they did before. It's not innovative.

LG Superfan, 26 Aug 2020 Yeah well one use case where wireless is useful To be honest, I would prefer if phone could come without wireless charging, and instead that phone case manufacturers would make cases that have built in wireless receiver and magnetic USB connector (as both magnetic connector are better than physical ports and as otherwise the bottom of the case would be thick to allow for USB length). Basically a mix between those cases : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M346Q8T https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QQ3ZZDW Those QI receiver with magnetic connector : https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33025252700.html But rather than having to buy a cable with the special head, having those adapter style : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PDY33K1 That would be just awesome, we could also make powerbank case + magnetic connector, or powerbank case + magnetic connector + wireless receiver combo, that way no need for wireless charger built it, and we could make the receiver a really thin layer beneath the surface, greatly improving efficiency.
