DigiDots magnetic balls have been recalled after four children swallowed them and needed surgery to remove them. Other brands of magnets have been connected to the death of two children who swallowed them.

HD Premier has recalled DigiDots 3mm and 5mm magnetic balls after it received reports of children swallowing them and requiring surgery to remove them.

In addition, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said it is aware of “other reports of children and teenagers ingesting other companies’ high-powered magnets and requiring surgery, including two deaths.”

The commission said, “When two or more high-powered magnets are swallowed, either intentionally by younger children or accidentally by older children, the ingested magnets can attract to each other, or to another metal object, and become lodged in the digestive system. This can result in perforations, twisting and/or blockage of the intestines, infection, blood poisoning and death.”

In August 2021, Zen Magnets recalled 10 million of its high-powered 5mm magnets and Neoballs after two children swallowed them and needed surgery to remove the magnets along with “parts of their intestines and bowels.” At the time, the CPSC said a 19-month-old girl died “after ingesting similar high-powered magnets.”

About 119,620 packages of DigiDots were sold online at Amazon and ilovedigitdots.com from March 2019 through January 2022 for between $20 and $30.

DigiDots are small “neodymium rare-earth magnets with a strong magnetic flux.”

The 3mm diameter magnets are sold as aggregated loose magnets in sets of 512 multi-colored magnetic balls.

The 5mm diameter magnets are sold as aggregated loose magnets in sets of 222 silver magnetic balls or 224 multi-colored magnetic balls.

HD Premier will provide prepaid labels to return the DigiDots and receive a refund.
