Kia Australia has confirmed the next-generation Niro will be making its local debut in late June, and will also be introducing local new car buyers to Kia’s high-tech connectivity feature, Kia Connect.

The Kia Niro will be launched with two highly efficient FWD electrified powertrains, including a hybrid (HEV) and full electric vehicle. Both will be available with a choice of two specification options, the base S trim, and the new flagship GT-Line trim (previously Sport).

A highly efficient Smartstream 1.6-litre GDI engine, found in the hybrid, features improved cooling, friction and combustion technologies. The four-cylinder unit produces a maximum output of 77.2kW along with 144Nm of torque, and is mated to a 6-speed DCT gearbox.

When combined with the 32kW permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, the HEV model produces a combined maximum power output of 104kW and 265Nm of torque.

The 64.8kWh EV variant is paired with a single speed transmission (reduction gear), provides 150kW power and 255Nm of torque, and a single charge driving range of 460km. Overall dimensions have grown too, with increased length of 65mm HEV/45mm EV.

The safety credentials of the Kia Niro range have also been boosted, offering extra active and passive safety equipment over the outgoing model with multi-collision braking, blind spot collision avoidance assist, and rear cross traffic collision avoidance assist.

Intelligent speed limit assist also standard across all trim levels. To suitably represent the change to GT-Line, both HEV and EV variants offer an extensive list of upgraded features, such as front ventilated seats, and a heated steering wheel.

A 10.25-inch digital driver cluster, head-up display, remote smart parking assist, powered tailgate, wireless phone charger, and telematics (Kia Connect) are also included. The EV GT-Line also receives power tilt and sliding sunroof, and premium relaxation seat.

An 8-speaker Harman/Kardon premium sound system is also included. An advanced voice car control system featuring natural voice recognition technology allows occupants to control key vehicle systems such as temperature and audio settings without lifting a finger.

Further specifications, and pricing details for the new Niro will be available closer to launch.
