DJI has announced the Osmo Action 3, the latest iteration of the Osmo action camera series.
The Osmo Action 3 features a 1/1.7-inch sensor and it is capable of shooting DCI 4K at up to 120fps. It features a 155° super-wide FOV, RockSteady 3.0, HorizonSteady, and HorizonBalancing.
The DJO Osmo Action 3 is the follow-up to the original Osmo Action camera that was released back in May 2019.
The Osmo Action 3 features a 1/1.7-inch sensor and it is capable of shooting in resolutions and frame rates of up to DCI 4K/120fps.
An improved heat management system enables continuous DCI 4K/60fps recording until the battery runs out of power. According to DJI, this solves the overheating issue that common to many other action cameras. A D-Cinelike Color Mode is available in video, slow-motion, and timelapse modes.
As a comparison, the original Osmo Action features a 1/2.3″ CMOS Sensor and it was capable of recording DCI 4K up to 60fps.
The Osmo Action 3 features a 1770mAh battery that not only lets the camera record for up to 160 minutes, but will also work in temperatures as low as -20° C (-4° F). It is claimed to be able to charge from 0-80% in as little as 18 minutes and from 0-100% in 50 minutes.
According to DJI, the Osmo Action 3 is the first action camera with native fast-charging support. The battery comes with Osmo Action 3 so no separate purchase is required.
A new multifunctional battery case charges three batteries at once and supports fast charging.
With a lot of content now being made exclusively for social media, DJI has included a new Horizontal-Vertical Protective Frame that allows users to change the camera’s orientation depending on their requirements.
The Osmo Action 3 is waterproof at depths of up to 16 meters without needing any additional housing. If you do need to go deeper than 16m there is an additional waterproof housing available.
The Osmo Action 3 has three electronic image stabilization options:
RockSteady 3.0 is claimed to effectively eliminate camera shake in all directions. It works up to 4K/120fps. This is the ideal stabilization for sport-specific scenes like bike riding, and on-the-go handheld filming.
HorizonSteady is claimed to help eliminate camera shake in all directions and even horizontally corrects tilt at any angle. That means footage can remain horizontally level, even through heavy bumps and 360° rotations.
HorizonBalancing corrects the tilt horizontally within ±45° and supports recording stable 4K/60fps videos. This is a middle ground solution between RockSteady and HorizonSteady. According to DJI, this mode is a good choice when the priority is a smooth 4K picture in a dynamic environment.
The Osmo Action 3 is the first action camera with dual touchscreens. This allows users to make setting adjustments from both the front and the rear of the camera. A three-mic stereo recording is claimed to help reduce wind noise and boost the audio quality
Wi-Fi Livestream supports 1080p/30fps, 720p/30fps and 480p/30fps, and pausing recording during the stream. UAC/UVC Webcam support offers high-quality video and audio for conference calls and livestreams.
The Osmo Action 3 connects with the DJI Mimo smartphone app via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth so you can see a live feed of the camera, access settings and various story templates, and do quick in-app editing, etc.
The LightCut video editor app can automatically select clips and intelligently match them with a range of in-built templates to generate ready-to-share video edits.
As you would expect with any action cam, there is a range of accessories you can use with the Osmo Action 3:
