Super fast, sustainable, and economical — futuristic high-speed trains are all the rage these days. As the world heads into the coming years of scarcer resources, climate change, and higher urban populations, these rail systems are providing travellers around the world with more efficient modes of travel.
In a first, southern China’s Xingguo county in Jiangxi province is now home to a new experimental sky train track. The Red Rail has debuted as the world’s first suspended magnetic levitation or maglev transit system. The 800-metre-long single suspended line operates about 33 feet above the ground.
The permanent magnets on this track produce a non-stop repelling force, strong enough to lift a train into the air. The futuristic super fast trains that run on this line are, hence, able to keep their underslung carriages suspended indefinitely without using any power supply!
The two-carriage train can carry up to 88 passengers, silently gliding along the track between elevated passenger platforms at speed up to 80 kmph. Red Rail is low-maintenance and needs less energy to accelerate, thanks to the free-floating conditions and an absence of friction.
China is brimming with an abundance of rare earth elements (nearly 40 per cent of Earth’s total reserve) required to make permanent magnets used in the trains. This is the major reason behind the success of the unique track. Local transport authorities have confirmed that after some test runs, the line would increase to 7.5 km, and its top operational speed would reach 120 kmph.
Earlier in July last year, a maglev bullet train that can reach speed of 600 kpmh had made its debut in China’s Qingdao neighbourhood. Several new maglev networks are reportedly under construction, including one linking Shanghai and Hangzhou and another connecting Chengdu and Chongqing.
